Whale Tales 2022 is a new art trail for Auckland, New Zealand
WWF-New Zealand’s Whale Tales, presented by Harcourts, is a Wild in Art event in partnership with Auckland Unlimited. Together and with the support of many other sponsors, Whale Tales brings a pod of uniquely designed and painted whale Tail sculptures to Tāmaki Makaurau - forming a free, family-friendly public art trail celebrating Aotearoa, art, and marine conservation.
Whale Tales features 80 Big Broos (large Tail sculptures) and 80 Pēpi (mini Tail sculptures) that have been turned into bespoke pieces of art by well-known and emerging kiwi artists and schools, and will be displayed across Tāmaki Makaurau streets, parks, and open spaces.
The Tails - inspired by the endangered Bryde’s whale – will tell the “tales” of our moana and how we all have a part to play for a healthy ocean. Find them all using the trail map on the Whale Tales 2022 app. Once you have found a sculpture you can collect them on the app, unlock rewards, view your trail stats, keep track of your steps with the in-built pedometer, and add pictures to our gallery. How many Tails will you discover?
When the trail ends, the mini Tails will be returned to schools to enjoy, and the large Tails will be auctioned to raise funds for WWF-New Zealand’s vital work to protect and restore the Hauraki Gulf/Tikapa Moana/Te Moananui-à-Toi.
So, download the app and discover unique places around Auckland you never knew about and connect with nature through the power of creativity!
